Well here we are, roughly six weeks into the school year and Amos has improved greatly and so have I!
It was difficult with Amos getting sick and then having to recover but after we got through that, things started to get better.
Amos is used to being away all day and is even enjoying it. He's making friends and is learning so many new things. One of the biggest things we've seen from his going to school has been a new passion for and ability to draw. Amos would rarely, if ever, sit down and draw or color in a coloring book. In fact, we have an entire bin full of coloring books that Amos likes to read but not color.
He now loves to sit and draw pictures with markers of Transformers, robots and a new love, Power Rangers (which he apparently learned about at school).
He's also doing better with eating his lunch. It was difficult at first, but I think he's gotten used to the time constraints. Every day, the first thing he reports is that he ate his lunch and I can tell that he feels really proud of himself. We had a good conference with his teacher last week and made some goals for the year. We want to see him grow in his learning of reading and writing and math. Also, we all want to see him grow, socially, not being too active and crazy, but to be able to control his body and be safe with it, even when he's playing. Yes, he's an active boy, so we expect him to be rowdy, but we also want him to learn self control.
When the first few weeks were tough, we really started to consider homeschooling him and I even asked friends for their advice. I got alot of good feedback and ideas for curriculum but as the weeks have gone by, I've started to wonder (again) if homeschooling is the best options for him. I think for Amos, the benefit of school is that he is learning from his peers, and for him, I think that's a big deal. I really believe that he learned how to draw from his good friend, as that is the first thing they would do together when they arrived at school.
So I don't know yet what is best, and we will be talking about it and researching more, looking into co-ops in the area and most of all, praying. It will also be interesting to see how Amos does during the winter and to see if his health plays a part in our decision. For now, we are all doing well and for that, I am very thankful!
