It's been a good few days, being home at our house, with Nathan. Amos loved being back with Dada--they've done lots of playing and hanging out together.
Yesterday we did not have Developmental Therapy, which I was a bit happy about. Since being mostly released from Physical Therapy last week, I've really wanted to stop Dev. Therapy too, as I think we've accomplished those goals as well. When Hannah called to cancel and I brought this up, she seemed hesitant to stop all together but was open to re-evaluating, so that's good. Amos is talking so much now; he's hearing sounds and is doing so well with communication that I feel like he would be bored with therapy. So we either need to step it up a bit and challenge him more or be given direction on how to continue to work with him each day. Yesterday we worked on letters and he's really close to being able to spell his name, believe it or not! He knows that the O comes after the M and that the S comes after the O. He's also begun to point out the O or S if we see it on a sign. He also knows the color blue and sometimes yellow. So we're going to focus on those things this week and get better so we can blow Hannah away when we see her next week!
Today we went and got Amos' orthotics for his feet.
So apparently, he's a bit loose-jointed, like his dad, so his hip, knee and muscle joints are a bit looser, making it more difficult for him to grasp easy gross motor skills like going up stairs, standing on one foot, etc. His feet also roll in a bit (and not due to lack of an arch, which I was thinking). So these orthotics are going to help his feet not roll in, giving them a more stable and consistent brace that will help stabilize him and help him have better balance and strength. Too, because his feet were rolling in, his inside leg muscles down to the feet were becoming elongated and his outside muscles along the ankle were becoming shortened, also making it tough for him to properly balance on his heels. Hopefully these will help his muscles to grow correctly and give him better balance and ability with kicking, jumping, etc.
Our appointment went well. Nathan was able to come with us and cuddled Amos when he started to freak out. It was great having him there, as I was able to talk to the Dr more and gain a better understanding of why we were doing this in the first place. Nathan and Amos played with the braces so by the time the Dr put them on Amos, he didn't freak out. Too, it helped that we chose the Clifford pattern, so were able to point out Clifford and his friends.
He won't be able to wear his cute little high tops anymore, sadly, but we did have a pair of lowtops ready from a sale my mom went to a few months back. Amos walked well immediately in his new Clifford shoes and has had no problems with them so far.
We were so proud of his cooperation and he was probably glad not to get a shot (which is usually the case at the Dr's office!).
We are eagerly awaiting a stop from my parents, who are driving through to go back home. Their vacation is almost over and have just enjoyed staying on Lake Michigan. It will be fun to see them again!
